The Dumagat rain dance is performed by the Dumagat-Remontado indigenous people in the Philippines, typically to call for rain during the dry season.

In 2023, the Angat Dam, which supplies water to Metro Manila and nearby provinces, dipped below minimum operating level. The Dumagat indigenous group came to perform their rain dance on July 11, 2023, and what fantastic timing! Rain then poured in many areas of the Philippines.

“I’m happy to say that I believe that the ancestors heard our indigenous group after they performed a rain dance on Monday,” Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) administrator Leonor Cleofas said in a radio interview.

I watched a video of their performance and was inspired by one particular pose. I love how both arms are thrown up as if to grab the rain from the sky. I’ll need to try it next time!
